Boilerplate

BindNotes is a handwritten notebook app for iPad, iPhone, and Mac. Its defining feature: you can lasso any strokes on a page and turn the selection into a tappable link to another page — the selected strokes are copied into the link target so the connection feels like a thought continuing, not a dead reference. Built on a custom Metal renderer with Apple Pencil at the center. iCloud Drive sync, no account, no analytics. Free with a one-time Pro purchase for PDF import, export, and a few extras. No subscription.

Use verbatim, or excerpt the parts you need.

Key features

  • Lasso → link → jump. Select strokes with the lasso tool, turn the selection into a link to a new or existing page. Selected strokes are copied to the destination so the link feels like a thought continuing.
  • Page Overview. Visual graph of every page connection in a notebook. Spot orphans, find hubs, navigate by tapping.
  • Headers and outline. H1–H5 levels on any page; the notebook builds a navigable outline automatically.
  • PDF import and annotation (Pro). Import any PDF; pen, highlighter, and lasso tools work on every page. The highlighter lifts pixels off the document — highlights become workable visual elements.
  • PDF export with clickable links (Pro). Export your notebook as a PDF with internal cross-references preserved. An outline page is auto-generated.
  • Custom Metal rendering. Built specifically for the lasso-link gesture, which needed raw stroke geometry that PencilKit doesn't expose.
  • iCloud Drive sync. One file per notebook. No account on the BindNotes side.
  • No AI. Intentionally — the product is about human thinking. No handwriting recognition runs on user notes.

Why it exists

Most digital notebooks treat your notes as a stack of pages — linear, page after page, dead ends. The web of your thinking doesn't fit that. BindNotes is a bet that handwriting becomes more useful when it can branch: when a sketch on one page can become a doorway to another. The lasso-to-link gesture is the smallest unit of that idea.

Founder

BindNotes is built by John Veresk, a solo developer working on iOS and macOS. The app is independent, self-funded, and not seeking investment. For interviews, contact [email protected].
